Job Overview
The Canadian Volunteer Program is seeking a passionate and experienced Technical Advisor – Advocacy and Communications to support advocacy initiatives, strategic communications, and public engagement programs in Ghana. This volunteer role is ideal for professionals who are motivated to contribute their expertise to community development, policy advocacy, and social impact initiatives.
The successful candidate will work closely with local partners, civil society organizations, and community stakeholders to design and implement advocacy campaigns, develop communication strategies, and strengthen institutional capacity. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain international development experience while making a meaningful impact in underserved communities.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical guidance and advisory support on advocacy strategies, communication planning, and public engagement initiatives
- Support partner organizations in designing and implementing advocacy campaigns that influence policy and social change
- Develop and review communication materials including reports, press releases, newsletters, social media content, and public awareness materials
- Strengthen organizational capacity through training, coaching, and mentorship in advocacy and communications best practices
- Conduct research, stakeholder analysis, and media mapping to support strategic advocacy planning
- Support monitoring, evaluation, and documentation of advocacy and communication activities
- Collaborate with local teams, international volunteers, and partner organizations to ensure program objectives are met
- Prepare periodic reports and knowledge products highlighting project outcomes and impact
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Development Studies, Public Relations, International Relations, Social Sciences, or a related field
- Minimum of 3 years professional experience in advocacy, communications, development work, public engagement, or related roles
- Proven experience in designing and implementing advocacy or communication strategies
- Strong writing, editing, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills
- Experience working with NGOs, civil society organizations, government agencies, or development partners is a strong advantage
- Ability to work independently in diverse cultural environments
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
- Commitment to volunteerism, community development, and social impact
