Both men and women in Ghana dress in smocks, a plaid shirt resembling the dashiki. In Ghana, it is the most often worn traditional clothing.
The smock is known by a variety of names, including Bingmaa in Dagbani, Bun-nw or Bana in Mamprusi, fugu in Mosi, batakari in the southern districts, dansika in Frafra, and Banaa in Kusaal, both in the upper east.
It is widespread throughout Ghana and is worn by both royals and commoners in Dagbon and other northern regions. The smock was invented in Ghana’s northern area and is now frequently worn by diasporans around the globe particularly in West Africa. The smock is similar to Burkina Faso’s faso dan fadi, the country’s traditional clothing.
